History of St. Ann Place Center
In March 2001, St. Ann Catholic Church in downtown West Palm Beach
initiated programs to reach out to its poor neighbors and the homeless women and men of the area.
A food pantry was started, a van service began,
and the Church continued to provide lunch to those who came for something to eat.
Two School Sisters of Notre Dame were hired to expand these services.
Soon the Community Services Office behind the Church was visited daily by the most vulnerable of our neighbors -
those without a place to live.
Without overnight shelters in the city, these people had nowhere to wash up or get their clothes clean.
That situation was the impetus for opening St. Ann Place in a building purchased and renovated
by the Diocese of Palm Beach.
Homeless clients can come to the center to take a shower.
A complete set of hygiene items is kept at the center for their use.
New socks and underwear are provided when needed.
Clients may leave a set of clothes with the person who operates the washers and dryers.
- Bag Lunch:
On weekdays, bag lunches consisting of a sandwich, drink, snack and fruit are distributed between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM.
On Saturday, the lunches are distributed from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM.
- Bus Passes:
Clients who meet Palm Tran eligibility criteria may come for daily or monthly bus passes
to keep appointments or go to work. Bus passes are distributed during morning hours Tuesday through Friday.
- Phone and Mail:
A telephone is available to the clients for local calls. Those who wish may use the center as their mailing address.
Free haircuts are offered on the first Wednesday of each month.
- Other Help:
The center staff and its volunteers strive to help clients in whatever way possibe.
They provide information about other agencies and help clients access their services.
Clients who need to get their ID or birth certificate are helped to acquire them.
Some emergency services are also available to new clients.
We collaborate with Vicker's House "Homeward Bound" program to assist clients to return to their families.
Project PATH staff come to the center on Mondays to interview homeless clients to assist them in finding a place to stay.
